WebChanges in the hormones, especially glucagon, control carbohydrate, protein, and lipid metabolism. β-cells are essentially “fuel sensors” that monitor and react to elevated nutrient load by releasing insulin. Thus, any failure in pancreatic β-cell function may lead to the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
